Kicking Off Farmers' Market Season With Some Farmers' Market Finds

Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers' Market

You guys should know by now that I loooooove farmers' markets. When we lived in Somerville, I used to be able to plan it so I could go to a different one each day of the week. Now that we're out in West Roxbury, I don't have markets close enough to swing by one every day, but the Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers' Market is my go-to on Saturday mornings. Last year, when I was new to the Roslindale farmers' market scene, I didn't have high expectations but my very first visit proved that I totally should have. The Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers' Market is huge and has tons of great vendors showcasing all sorts of awesome products. There's produce from farms including Allandale and Brookwood, specialty products like Heirloom Kitchen's prepared meals, and even things like soaps and ceramics.

This past Saturday, in addition to scoping out the market on opening day and visiting the usual vendors, I had the opportunity to sample the new Farmer's Pick by Welch's® juices.

Have you heard of them yet? These juices, which are sold in 46-ounce bottles and come in Concord Grape, Blackberry, and Mango flavors, bring fresh-picked fruit taste to the juice aisle.

According to Welch's, the Farmer's Pick juices are made from unfiltered juice, giving them body, aroma, and flavor, and they have no preservatives and no artificial flavors or synthetic colors -- and no added sugar. They're 100% juice! They also deliver a whole serving of fruit in one 4-ounce glass. (While I love eating fresh fruit, sometimes it's easier to rack up those daily fruit servings with a glass of juice.)

I tried all three flavors at the market. The Concord Grape was my favorite. It's just bursting with fruit flavor and transported me back to childhood lunches of peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches with its intense grape taste.

Blackberry and Mango are also fruit forward and delicious. Welch's keeps its kettles cool while batching the juices, which helps preserve the delicate fruit flavor and aroma. That extra care is evident in the finished product.

In addition to the juices, Welch's also has a line of Farmer's Pick Fruit Spreads. Like the juices, the spreads have no artificial colors or flavors and no preservatives. They're made with 100% North American grown fruit and come in Concord Grape, Strawberry, and Raspberry flavors.

After getting my fill of the fresh fruit taste of the juices, I wandered around the rest of the market with Jeff and Gunner. The growing season is just kicking off around here and many of the stands had gorgeous heads of lettuce and other greens on offer as well as plants (tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and more) that are ready to be brought home and added to the garden. We also found some cool prints at Wilding Davis & Company and couldn't help checking out the beautiful cutting boards at the Boston HandyWorks stand. I love the variety at the market, from fresh-picked produce to juices, jams, and sauces to crafts and handiwork.

Wandering around the farmers' market is one of my favorite Saturday morning activities, and it was fun to sample the Farmer's Pick by Welch's juices while visiting my favorite vendors and discovering new ones as well. I can't wait to see what finds there will be next time! (If you missed the farmers' market, look for Farmer's Pick by Welch's in the juice aisle.)

Do you enjoy going to the farmers' market?
